History of Platform of the Anderson County Democratic Party
The first platform was written in the 1970s, by a committee chaired by Frank Plasil.
The Platform Committee was reactivated in 1994 and chaired by Helen Jernigan. The committee met regularly over a two-year period, including meeting jointly with the Political Committee. Drafts were mailed to all Executive Committee members, and a hearing was conducted at a meeting of the Executive Committee held for the purpose of reviewing the preliminary draft. The Platform Committee also published a pamphlet entitled
What It Means To Be A Democrat,
that was distributed with 1996 campaign literature and is the basis for our
15 Principles (click here)
.
The proposed platform was adopted by the Executive Committee in October 1996.
In 1997, Jan Newsome chaired the next Platform Committee. A lengthy questionnaire regarding platform content was mailed to 600 Anderson County voters who always vote democratic, and ideas were solicited from Executive Committee members as well as other prominent Democrats. The proposed revisions were discussed at several open and well publicized Executive Committee meetings. The proposed platform revisions were accepted by the Executive Committee in September 1999, and the platform was readopted by the newly-elected Executive Committee in October 1999.
The next Platform Committee was chaired again by Helen Jernigan. Their preliminary recommendations, which were presented at the County Convention on April 7, 2001, were referred to the Executive Committee.
The initial meeting of the present Platform Committee was held July 11, 2001, and Tom Burns was elected Chair.
